I like to take an eclectic approach, majorly consisting of humanistic and cognitive approaches. I prefer cognitive therapies as they focus on what people think and by modifying dysfunctional thoughts, people can change how they feel and what they do while humanistic therapies focus on individual's own resources to make rational choices and develop to their maximum potential. I have an inclination towards positive psychotherapy as well.
Counseling is a process that helps one become more self-aware and accepting. It taps on inner resources of an individual to deal with problems, which is certainly empowering in itself. Sometimes, we are unable to look clearly when we are surrounded by problems but counselling acts as a facilitating process to see things more clearly.
I chose Counseling because I have a strong desire to help others. The most rewarding part about being a counselor is to join clients on their journey of self-discovery and change. I possess the skills like self- awareness, acceptance, non-judgemental attitude which can make people feel safe and talk about their problems.
I let clients to vent their feelings because being there and listening is sometimes what is needed. And then, a good therapeutic relationship adds trust and safe space for clients to open up and discuss their problems. This is when I showcase my skills and then take an eclectic approach to help facilitate the process of change.
